Best Click Fraud Detection Tools for Enterprise Advertisers ($1M+ Ad Spend)
This report reveals how much of the Education sector's paid media budget is lost to bots, scrapers, and fake leads, based on an analysis of almost five million unprotected ad clicks.
Education advertisers face an average invalid traffic (IVT) rate of 4.66%, and it has risen every quarter, up 33% in nine months. The sharpest rise is in Google Search, the channel the sector relies on most, where IVT more than doubled from 2.32% to 5.50%.
With Google now automatically upgrading eligible Search campaigns to AI Max, more of that channel's query matching is moving into automated systems, whether advertisers opt in or not.

Invalid traffic (IVT) is any ad click or website visit that doesn't come from a real person with genuine buying interest. It includes bots (both benign and malicious), accidental clicks, malicious clicks from competing advertisers, and the scraping, affiliate abuse and arbitrage that high-volume retail advertising attracts.
Invalid traffic never converts, so every invalid click wastes budget directly. And worse, it feeds corrupted data back into ad platform bidding algorithms, pulling your campaigns further away from genuine shoppers over time.
Education advertisers compete on some of the most expensive keywords in paid search, and the sector runs on low-barrier conversion events: inquiry forms, prospectus downloads, open-day registrations, and course trials. AI-powered bots can now complete those forms with plausible personal details, so every fake lead costs twice: once in media spend, and again in the admissions time spent chasing a student who never existed.
Add one of the most aggressive brand-bidding cultures in digital advertising, where universities and course platforms routinely bid on each other's names, and an ecosystem of rank monitors, scrapers, and competitor-intelligence tools crawling those same queries around the clock. International recruitment widens the exposure further, across dozens of markets that are hard to police one by one. At a 4.66% average, invalid traffic raises the true cost of every genuine lead, pollutes lead scoring and remarketing pools, and corrupts the signals bidding algorithms learn from.

Across almost five million analyzed ad clicks, the average invalid traffic rate for Education and E-Learning advertisers was 4.66%.
It rose in every quarter of the analysis, from 4.08% in Q4 2025 to 5.43% in Q2 2026, a 33% increase in nine months.
For an education advertiser spending $5 million per year on paid advertising at an average $6.23 CPC, a 4.66% IVT rate translates to roughly $233,000 in directly wasted ad spend each year.
Factoring in a conservative 3:1 return on ad spend, the lost revenue opportunity approaches $700,000 annually. Neither figure includes the admissions and sales time spent following up fake leads.
Google Search carried 59% of the sector's Google clicks and recorded the sharpest rise of any Google channel. Search IVT rose 137% in nine months, from 2.32% in Q4 2025 to 5.50% in Q2 2026, making it the worst-performing Google channel by the end of the period.
The rise also accelerated: +0.87 points over the winter, then +2.31 points into Q2.
AI Max-enabled campaigns accounted for only 7–9% of the sector's Search clicks, and their IVT rates tracked at or slightly below standard Search, with both roughly doubling together. On samples this small, that is an absence of evidence rather than evidence of safety.
But that is now changing. Google began automatically upgrading eligible legacy Search campaigns to AI Max in September 2026, including those using Dynamic Search Ads and campaign-level broad match. Lunio's Retail report found IVT rising 114% in AI Max campaigns while standard Search fell, and we will publish updated Education cohort data as adoption scales.
In this analysis, Meta recorded the highest average invalid traffic rate of any qualifying platform at 8.34%, roughly one in every 12 clicks, peaking at 9.20% in Q1 2026.
Google averaged 3.70%, less than half Meta's rate. But Google carried 79% of the sample's click volume and its rate rose 46% across the period, so its invalid traffic represents more wasted spend than Meta's.
Across the sector's worst-performing campaigns, those targeting competitor names carried a 9.3% invalid traffic rate, roughly double the 4.7% recorded by generic, non-brand campaigns. One competitor-targeting Search campaign ran above 33% IVT for two consecutive quarters.
Advertisers' own brand campaigns were the cleanest category on average at 3.6%, but prone to sudden spikes, consistent with competitor monitoring tools and scrapers hitting brand terms in concentrated bursts.
