How AI agents are reclaiming advertisers' wasted spend
This report reveals how much of the Retail sector's paid media budget is silently lost to bots, scrapers, and fraudulent clicks, based on an analysis of over 414 million ad clicks.
Retail advertisers face an average invalid traffic (IVT) rate of 5.00%, and it is rising every quarter, with individual campaigns running as high as 81%, meaning the vast majority of those clicks had no chance of ever converting.

Invalid traffic (IVT) is any ad click or website visit that doesn't come from a real person with genuine buying interest. It includes bots (both benign and malicious), accidental clicks, malicious clicks from competing advertisers, and the scraping, affiliate abuse and arbitrage that high-volume retail advertising attracts.
Invalid traffic never converts, so every invalid click wastes budget directly. And worse, it feeds corrupted data back into ad platform bidding algorithms, pulling your campaigns further away from genuine shoppers over time.
No sector has moved more of its paid media into automated, machine-managed campaign types. Shopping, Performance Max, Advantage+, and now AI Max decide where an ever-growing share of retail budget is actually spent, trading control and visibility for reach.
That automation, combined with peak-season budget surges and heavy reliance on affiliate, comparison and coupon networks, widens the surface area open to bots, scrapers, and made-for-advertising inventory. At thin retail margins, a 5% invalid rate erodes ROAS, pollutes remarketing pools, and corrupts the data every automated system learns from.
Across more than 414 million analysed ad clicks, the average invalid traffic rate for Retail advertisers was 5.00%.
It rose in every quarter of the analysis, from 4.18% in Q4 2025 to 5.54% in Q2 2026, and individual campaigns recorded rates as high as 81%.
For a retailer spending $5 million per year on paid advertising at an average $3.70 CPC, a 5.00% IVT rate translates to roughly $250,000 in directly wasted ad spend each year.
Factoring in a conservative 3:1 return on ad spend, the lost revenue opportunity approaches $750,000 annually.
In a like-for-like comparison inside the same accounts, Search campaigns using AI Max saw invalid traffic rise 114% over three quarters (from 2.46% to 5.28%), while standard Search campaigns without it fell 17%.
Because Google begins auto-upgrading eligible legacy Search campaigns to AI Max from September 2026, just before Black Friday, it is the report's most time-sensitive finding.
In this analysis, Meta recorded the highest average invalid traffic rate of any major channel at 5.99%, followed by TikTok at 5.56%.
Google averaged 4.75% and Microsoft Ads (Bing) 4.46%, though Google's far larger share of retail budget means its invalid traffic represents the most wasted spend of any platform.
Only partially. Ad platforms catch the obvious cases like duplicate clicks, declared bots, and basic behavioural patterns, but sophisticated invalid traffic that mimics real shoppers routinely slips through.
Comprehensive real-time analysis is computationally expensive for platforms to run at scale, and platform documentation often shifts traffic-quality responsibility onto the advertiser.
